Summary

THE RETURN OF THE KING, which brings to a close the great epic of war and adventure begun in The Fellowship of the Ring and continued in The Two Towers, is the third and final part of J。 R。 R。 Tolkien’s masterpiece, “The Lord of the Rings。”

In these three books, which form one continuous narrative, Tolkien created the saga of the Hobbits of Middle-earth and the great War of the Rings。 Praised by such writers and poets as W。 H。 Auden, Richard Hughes and C。 S。 Lewis, “The Lord of the Rings” – that special world of beauty and terror and meaning – holds a secure place among the books that will live。

There were several notable deaths in this last part of the story。 An ironic situation existed in two different deaths during the battle of the Pelennor Fields。 One has fought until the end and faced an unexpected but heroic death, and another has given up his battle and chose a pathetic death。 Many crucial decisions were risked by analysing Sauron's psychological mind game。Book Review: The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3) by J。R。R。 Tolkien。 There were several notable deaths in this last part of the story。 An ironic situation existed in two different deaths during the battle of the Pelennor Fields。 One has fought until the end and faced an unexpected but heroic death, and another has given up his battle and chose a pathetic death。 Many crucial decisions were risked by analysing Sauron's psychological mind game。Book Review: The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3) by J。R。R。 Tolkien。 。。。more

Although I did not love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I consider it a must-read for fans of fantastic literature。 My main criticism ois the excessive amount of details and short stories that do not always add much to the main action。 Thus, reading these books becomes, at times, boring。 It is still an incredible story, a unique universe, although I have to admit that the Hobbit is, in my opinion, much superior to the Lord of the Rings。 Not only because it has much more action, but also because o Although I did not love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I consider it a must-read for fans of fantastic literature。 My main criticism ois the excessive amount of details and short stories that do not always add much to the main action。 Thus, reading these books becomes, at times, boring。 It is still an incredible story, a unique universe, although I have to admit that the Hobbit is, in my opinion, much superior to the Lord of the Rings。 Not only because it has much more action, but also because of the more imaginative and cheerful tone。 。。。more

Overall a good ending but one that as a book seems to fall for the series’ biggest weaknesses。 The slow pacing in particular hurt Return of the King more than the previous entries, as the first half was mostly a drag。 I don’t know why but it’s like Tolkien with these events following everyone but Frodo and Sam switches to this dreadfully dry way of presenting the story。 Why he decided to distance us from the characters so much in these important battles aside from a few standout scenes is a bit Overall a good ending but one that as a book seems to fall for the series’ biggest weaknesses。 The slow pacing in particular hurt Return of the King more than the previous entries, as the first half was mostly a drag。 I don’t know why but it’s like Tolkien with these events following everyone but Frodo and Sam switches to this dreadfully dry way of presenting the story。 Why he decided to distance us from the characters so much in these important battles aside from a few standout scenes is a bit baffling。The second half was once again much better, a running theme for the series。 Unfortunately, it wasn’t as consistently good as the last two books。 Frodo and Sam’s journey through Mordor and the Scouring of the Shire were particularly excellent but the celebrations between tragically fall back into the first half’s dreary “Then this happened。 Then this happened,” style of prose。In the end it’s a good book, but I was hoping to fall more in love with the series as I went on, not the opposite。 There was a certain wonder that pervaded even the most sleepy parts of Fellowship of the Ring that was unfortunately lost for large parts of the latter books。 These last two books felt like I was reading a dull history textbook in narrative form for the first half only to finally get back to the engaging story and that sense of wonder in the second half。 I’m glad I finally read these, but it is a bit sad I didn’t love them more。 。。。more

Possibly the greatest epic in the English language (yes, I have read Milton)。 Engrossing (as all good stories), thought-provoking, and perhaps most importantly, transformative。 I continue to be a better human being because of it。

Loolollolololol。 This book did literally what i crave of all series, which is it essentially ended the story midway through and then covered EVERYTHING that happened afterwards。 But there's a reason why most authors don't do that。 Like good call, movie, for ending when it did。 Because the movie would essentially have been half epilogue。I found it an interesting author's choice to have the novel focalized through Samwise, but I suppose Frodo's narrative was always through Samwise's perspective。I Loolollolololol。 This book did literally what i crave of all series, which is it essentially ended the story midway through and then covered EVERYTHING that happened afterwards。 But there's a reason why most authors don't do that。 Like good call, movie, for ending when it did。 Because the movie would essentially have been half epilogue。I found it an interesting author's choice to have the novel focalized through Samwise, but I suppose Frodo's narrative was always through Samwise's perspective。I also realized that Tolkien doesn't really know how to do women。 It was okay but it was still pretty 1 dimensional。 Very virtuous, strong women。 But。 Yeah。 No thanks。I'm just glad i finally read these lol。There are definitely some epic lines around good and evil, character, and friendship。 :)Now I really want to rewatch the films。 。。。more

I'm still nowhere near as in love with this series as most, but the second half of this book got significantly better。 Less clearly-linear journey through the forest, more complex character development and introspection about good and bad。 I'm still nowhere near as in love with this series as most, but the second half of this book got significantly better。 Less clearly-linear journey through the forest, more complex character development and introspection about good and bad。 。。。more
